Hungarian Social Security Card (TAJ Card)
Wednesday, 1 July, 2026
This article is the second part of our guide to health insurance and medical care for international students at the University of Pécs. In last week's article, we introduced the available health insurance options. This week, we take a closer look at the Hungarian Social Security system (TAJ).
As an alternative to private insurance, international students may apply for a Hungarian Social Security Card (TAJ card), which provides access to public healthcare services in Hungary. Applications must be submitted in person at the local office of the National Health Insurance Fund in Pécs.
Required Documents
- Registration card
- Address card (or lease agreement/dormitory contract)
- Certificate of enrolment
- EU identity card or passport
The monthly contribution fee is set by the Hungarian authorities and may change, so students should check the current rate before applying.
Scholarship Holders
Students receiving Hungarian government-funded scholarships, including the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme, are entitled to healthcare services in Hungary and receive a TAJ card free of charge.
Medical Treatment and Payment
Students without private insurance or a TAJ card must pay for medical services according to the University of Pécs Clinical Centre's reimbursement policy.
- Students with contracted insurance providers (e.g. Generali): Eligible medical costs are covered directly by the insurance provider.
- Students with other insurance providers: Students pay for treatment according to the University's Code of Charges and Benefits, then receive an outpatient medical record and invoice to submit for reimbursement.
- Uninsured students: Students must also pay at the time of treatment and receive an outpatient medical record and invoice. Any further examinations or specialist care can be accessed through the primary healthcare system.
Important
All international students are strongly encouraged to obtain valid, comprehensive health insurance before beginning their studies. Health insurance is a requirement for enrolment at the University of Pécs and ensures access to healthcare services throughout their stay in Hungary.
